How to assign IP Address to the client & server computer?
80In this tutorial we will learn how to assign IP address to a computer. Before that I should make it clear that every PC will have its own unique IP address. Assigning same IP to other PC will give you “duplicate IP address” error. IP is like our mobile no. it has to be different from others. The IP address, we are going to assign, will be static & assigned manually. For this, follow the following procedure attentively.
1. First open My Network Places properties.
2. In the properties window, under LAN or High-Speed Internet heading select your Local Area Connection.

3. Now a new window should popup, titled "Local Area Connection Properties". Here you have to select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) option then click on properties button. This will again bring a new popup "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties".

4. In this window you have to select "Use the following IP Address" radio button and give the given value as shown in the picture. Exactly like this.
NOTE : To understand this tutorial easily, I would recommend you to assign this address to that computer which would be your server (in case if you want to share internet). Otherwise you can assign this address to any of your computers.
Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) Properties
5. You will be happy to hear that you have successfully assigned IP address of your first PC, now it’s time for the second PC. The process will be the same; the only we have to change or assign IP address to the second PC. So, we will begin from Step 4. On second PC we have to change IP address to “192.168.0.2” and subnet mask will be the same. You can see that in below image. If you have more PC to connect to network, so your next PC IP address will be “192.168.0.3” and so on.
IP Address assignment on Client PC
Now you need to check the connectivity between these PCs, we will confirm this connectivity with ping command. Go to Run or press Windows Key+ R and type “ping 192.168.0.1” from client PC, you should get following replies.

That was handy... For those who switches around networks (obviously in a lappiee) will use some sortta IP managers and switchers.. They are easy to use as well.

Note that you can sometimes speed up your broadband by using DNS servers that arean't your ISP's such as Google or OpenDNS'.
You can also use an internal DNS server if you have a domain controller, although the speed difference isn't huge - makes a bit of difference however.
Setting the IP, default gateway and DNS static for every PC is the best way IMO as when using DHCP on clients sometimes a network initialisation delay is apparent.
For this reason I don't opt out of choice to use DHCP other than when I have to such as PXE booting.
@John Aryan - you might need to setup your router to do this or if you use a linux distro as a firewall/router use IPtables or do this if your router runs a linux OS if you know how.
Do you have a different default gateway for clients on different IP range? or do they use the same one? that is they key unless you have firewall rules blocking icmp.

@prabhat why do you want to have a hub and a switch? is the distance between the hub and switch big? it's way better having 2 switches and no hubs - hubs are not as intelligent as switches are. Switches allow packets to be sent directly to where they are meant sent, whereas, with a hub packets don't get send directly, thus hubs are slower and much less efficient.
To connect a hub to a switch ot a switch to a switch all you need is a straight ethernet cable - most switches nowadays have auto negotiating ports so you don't even need to use a crossover cable from an uplink port on one to connect to a standard port on the other.

@Alexies Knight: Setup is ok but u need to save login information in your asdl modem so that when ever any pc try to connect to internet. it will connect directly.

Ive followed your guide and its goes well,,router to hub and assigning ip add to server and client pc ive done this during no internet connection available at my shop.
now i have net connection,,and the server pc used to config my dlink router.
so what happened is..
for the server pc- the tcp/ip properties in GEn goes
obtain ip address and dns automatcally..and i use the alternate config to put the ip add of server pc (192.168.0.2)(192.168.0.1 for router)
and so for the client pc..
the prob is i cant ping each every pc,,but netwok games goes well.and one thing sometimes one of the client pc hane no net connection

I have a question about networking. I've been trying for a few months now and just cant seem to figure out the problem. Maybe you can help ? I've got various things on a small network and am trying to use 2 routers for remote comms to log into a remote PC. I can log into Router 1 and it port forwards through to the PC. I can also do this with router 2. However when both Routers are enabled, half of the IP addresses dissappear and I cant get through to the PC.
I have the following IP addresses set up as follows :
192.168.1.1 (HMI)
192.168.1.2 (PC LAN card 1)
192.168.1.3 (Router 1 IP address and gateway)
192.168.1.4 (PLC)
192.168.1.5 (PC LAN card 2)
192.168.1.6 (Router 2 IP address and gateway)
What I'm trying to do is log in remotely to the PC via either router 1 or router 2. Router 2 provides redundancy if router 1 goes down. I have all the port forwarding working fine.
My problem is as follows :
If I enable router 1, I can see the first 4 IP addresses. If I enable router 2 as well at the same time, the 4 IP addresses which router 1 can see dissappear and I can only see the IP addresses 192.168.1.2 (PC), 192.168.1.5 and 192.168.1.6.
I dont understand why the IP addresses 1-4 dissappear. Could you help ?
What I wish to happen, is that I can log in to either router and I can get through to the computer.
Do I need to set up ICS or bridge the two LAN PCI cards ? I've tried all this and still the IP addresses 1-4 dissappear when router 2 is enabled. Its almost like router 2 takes priority for some reason over router 1.

Hi @Nomi, i know this kind of the thing happens when u download from any file sharing site. Only option is to find download manager supporting that site.

my internet connection is connected through LAN card in my computer (OS is Win XP). i want to share my internet connection by installing another LAN card in same computer. when i share 1st LAN card connection it assign the IP addres 192.168.0.1 to 2nd LAN card and other system have DHCP enable and they got 192.168.0.* i just want to change this IP class that 192.168.2.1 instead of 192.168.0.1 and so on for clients get automaticly 192.168.2.* .
