Setup LAN with Hub or Switch (with cable color code)

By

Switch or HUB allows us to add more computers in our LAN or existing LAN. Switch or HUB is usually needed when we are networking more than two PCs. Why we need Switch or HUB only when networking more than two PCs? Because, for two PC networking we have crossover connection which does not require any expensive hardware like Switch or HUB. So, it is wise to use crossover connection.

Here we are going to connect more than two PCs, so we need a Switch or HUB. These devices are user friendly, and you don’t need to worry about what configuration these device need. The entire attention should be paid in crimping and IP address assigning. Because if you crimped the cables in RJ45 wrongly, you will need a new RJ45 and good quality of RJ45 cost double of ordinary one. I always recommend you good quality of RJ45 & UTP cables.

If you want to purchase switch or hub devices then please check my suggestion of products below or you can visit my Amazon.com store for more option.

Standard Color Code (Click to enlarge)

Process

Color code of direct LAN cabling is simpler than the crossover LAN cabling, because there no jumble of wires all goes from one RJ45 to another RJ45 directly. No changes at all.

Here is a simple diagram showing you connection of two RJ45 connectors. As you can see that there is various color of wire denoting the standard color code for cable. This should be arranged in this manner. Left side RJ45 is No.1 & right side RJ45 is no. 2.

RJ45 no. 1 & RJ45 no. 2 will have the wires according to standard color code and there will be no changes.

Direct connection (Click to enlarge)

If you have arranged your wires according to standard color code then crimp them cautiously. Now get ready for the next step which is IP address assigning to your Client & Server.

Hey, I have a Linksys SD208 Router which has 8 ports. I tried assigning them Static IP Addresses which don't conflict and left DNS and Gateway Fields blank. The computers on the workgroup wont connect.

Any help recieved is apprecieated

ifyouhardware 2 years ago

@merk: yes you can. You can buy a switch and connect it through a RJ45 cable from any switch port, to any DIR-615 router port to enlarge your network.

I have two win xp Pcs and two HP color Laserjet dn5550 printers. I wanted to network these items and bought an eight port D-link switch. I assigned the following IP addresses to the two PCs; 192.168.0.1 and 192.186.0.2, and for the printers; 192.168.0.194 and 198.168.0.195.

When I pinged the two printers from each Pcs,there was a reply but when I pinged one computer from the other, it gave 'request timed out'. I disabled the firewalls from the PCs it still did not work. I tried sharing the harddisk of the PCs, it did not work also. What can I do to make the two PCs see each other?

@Naseeb : you don't have to alter cable color coding and TCP/IP depends on your choice. Either you can use dynamic IP or static IP

I need one help. I have 8 computers connected to a broadband internet using D-Link Switch box. I want to find out computer wise usage of Internet. Is it possible ? if yes, Please suggest me

Lantean 4 months ago

I have a Wi-max router, a USB modem, and six client PCs and a server(actually another PC as the server).

Before purchasing the router, i routed all internet connection through the server(that is while using the USB modem). Things were easy and uncomplicated, THEN.

But now things have gotten complicated:

Whenever i'm using the router, i have to use the wall clock rather than using my cafe billing software because i have to look up the time manually.

My client PCs can access the internet it's just that i can't get my trial version of CyberKlock cafe-billing software to work whenever i'm using the router.

Please help cos it's driving me nuts.

Lantean 4 months ago

Almost forgot, when using the router, all the clients are connected through a hub which uses the secondary LAN port on the router while the server uses the primary LAN port.

pctechgo 2 months ago

Nice post that can be used to crimp RJ45 connectors to cabling.

Most switches sold now have auto-detect whether the connecting device is a computer or another switch and automatically enable crossover internally.

Thank you for the Hub and for sharing.

Nice straight through connection image and cross-over connection image. Very easy to follow.

Thank you for sharing.
